And thus the battle commences

The annual battle to keep my car legal that is.

Here’s the first test result:

Kinja'd!!!

Four fail items:

One of the two rods that secure the battery had come undone, miraculously without losing itself, a washer and a 10mm nut, all of which were still sitting in the battery tray

Tyre worn (knew that, wouldn’t buy a new one without knowing the overall diagnosis)

CO emissions at high speed just over the limit (they’re usually just below)

Rear brakes uneven. Oddly the handbrake, while using the same calipers and discs, is almost perfectly balanced.

First step is to try an additive in the fuel and see does that have any effect. If we can get the CO legal we can proceed to the brakes and tyre.

Well, at least it doesn’t have the issue of turning itself to dust this year...

Hope you can sort out the issues!

For the brakes. Probably just need to lube the slide pins, one of them’s probably stuck.

Interestingly, the left caliper jammed a couple of weeks ago and was replaced (all else having failed, it was 23 years old). The pads weren’t though and the LH one is now more worn than the right.

I was surprised not to hear anything about rust this year!

Doesn’t sound too bad. If you can get the emissions down a little money thrown at the rest will let you pass.

Ireland, but there’s similar testing throughout the EU.

Surprisingly, and if I need them, I can get a pair of rear discs for €60 delivered.

The originals have only lasted 280,000 km...

The HC or hydrocarbon is high too, if the car has cats, the cats may be a bit tired. Tired cats, a worthwhile google image search.
